Hi, can't find an answer to this problem elsewhere.

Short story, my airport keeps disconnecting, after which my imac can't find the router/network any more. The router displays a full connection, and the ethernet stays connected (but is desperately slow). Sometimes its after 20 minutes or so, usualy after about 1 minute. Only when I on/off the router does it recognise/list the network.

Long story:
imac running 10.4.9
Linksys WAG54G router
isp uses PPPoA. Router set accordingly
Network set up to use DHCP Automatic
All 'disconnect' related tabs unclicked or set to remain on constantly, both in the router and on the mac.
All router internal, and mac network settings apparently consistent.

As I say, it works fine, for about a minute - so I know all the settings are essentially correct. But I cannot stop it disconnecting, then loosing recognition of the network. Been at this for weeks. Please help.

Have you looked at Linksys' site for a newer firmware version for the router? It sounds for all the world like two things are happening: either the firmware is goofed up (it happens, these products (NOBODY'S home routers) aren't built to "mission critical" standards), or you're experiencing some sort of weird power problem that's goofing up the router. I am inclined to think the former, and would suggest either reloading the current firmware or updating to a newer version. If it still gives you problems, report here and we'll go farther.

I tried upgrading the firmware, to little or no effect. The problem is not with the router timing out or disconnecting (its not a power related issue). Its with the imac dropping the connection to the router, while the router itself still appears to have a full connection.
And why only when I turn the router off and on again, does internet connect list the right network, and magicaly connect to it again as if nothing was wrong.

As I say, nowhere in the settings is it set to disconnect for any reason.

Is your AirPort software up to date? This was a problem that many people mentioned up until an update in April (I think). If it's not up to date, run the update (Software Update should find it for you) and see if things are better.

This could be the same issue as reported here.

My bet it is keychain. Had problem similar. Deleted keychain info, resetup wireless and fixed. If that don't work, change the channel. Some cordless phones interfere. What kind of encryption are you using?

I'd say it's more likely the keychain issue than the channel. But FIRST, I'd delete the currently used AirPort location and create a new one. That's been known to fix a multitude of symptoms. It should also impact whether or not your key/password is stored in the keychain and accessed correctly. Plus it's quick and easy to do, so if that doesn't fix the problem then you're only out a few minutes' time.
