I'm trying to get my black macbook 2.0ghz Core Duo to connecto to a public open wireless network. It connects to the network, but won't let me use the internet! It says that I'm conected and have ful signal strength though.

HOWEVER, when I boot into Windows Vista ultimate, the internet starts working right away without having to change any settings. In OS X (10.4.9) I've tried everything from renewing the DHCP (router here uses DHCP according to Vista) and I've even tried using a static address and DNS, but nothing works. Also play with file sharing settings but nothing working. OS X connects to internet fine at home though. I've also had this problem at other public sites, but then again some work.....what gives?

any help? thanks for any suggestions!

Try toggling the IPv6 settings on/off (under the System Preferences>Network>Airport>TCP/IP settings).

tried that, still not working! I'm at the same cafe and still am forced to use windows because OS X refuses to connect to the internet. I know its not a hardware problem because the connection works perfect in Vista!! what could possibly be wrong? Oh and I just reinstalled OS X with all the latest updates about 3 weeks ago.....

help pleasE??

thanks!

Whoah! I've actually had this same problem. However, I think it was Windows (XP) that wasn't working, but OS X was. Check this out: the solution was to cold-reset my Linksys wireless router. How weird is that?

Anyway, do that, and I bet it'll fix it.

I've decided that I should try harder to remember what was happening and be more clear. Here's what I remember:

MacOS X could connect to my little home network, no problem. When I'd go into Windows XP (via bootcamp), Windows would connect to the wireless router, get assigned a proper IP address ... and then fail to connect to the internet.

I'm pretty sure that I could get to websites by typing in their IP addresses while in Windows. For instance, to get to google, enter http://64.233.167.99 in the address bar. But that part is hazy.

I changed my name servers, renewed my DHCP lease, double-checked all my internet explorer security settings, connected to my router to see that it saw I was connected, stuff like that.

It wasn't until I cold-reset my router and the modem it was connected to that the problem went away. I always reset them together and in a specific orer (since Comcast's modems sometimes fail to assign my wireless router an IP address if I don't), so I don't know which one was at fault. But I can just about guarantee it was the router.

Is it a specific network that OSX refuses to connect to, or all of them?

I'm actually traveling in Bolivia, and it's only been here in bolivia that I've had this problem. At EVERY internet cafe! Other people with macbooks at the cafe i'm at right now are also unable to connect. Thank god I had Vista installed

any other suggestions? drivers/apps i can download? I have a program called AP Grapher that graphs signal strength and all that stuff for all the wireless networks in range, and the one I can connect to in OS X is plenty strong, it just doesnt let me browse the internet. AHHHH

Try creating a new user account, and see if that works.

Forgive me for stating the obvious...but it seems quite clear that the problem is NOT with your MacBook, but with the Internet cafe.

I'm sorry - I misread that - yes - if no one with a Macbook can connect, then it's not you!

i know i know, but doesnt it seem wierd that only windows can connect to the internet and that OS X can never connect to the internet, only to the network? Doesnt make sense. I felt like if I added DNS it should work...but no... what gives?!
