This is a personal home network. I have a 2Wire wireless router hooked up to a Sony Vaio laptop by ethernet cable through a dock, and a MacBook connected by wireless.

When I look at the device list on my network, a third device is shown that I can't place. The Sony and the Macbook are named, and those names show up in the device list, but the third is listed by IP number only and is labeled as connected by ethernet (as opposed to wireless like my MacBook).

I looked up the beginning of each MAC number to see if looking at the manufacturer would help pinpoint what the device is. The Vaio showed up as "Sony", the MacBook showed up as "Apple Inc.", and the unnamed device showed up as "Apple Computer".

This is odd to me, since this Macbook is the only Mac I've owned. I also had an iPod mini, and I just purchased an iPod nano with my new MacBook (ah, I love being a teacher). I didn't think the iPods could be the device since I didn't think iPods ever hook into an ethernet, but to a computer. I figured I'd mention it since it is an Apple product.

Any ideas on how to identify the device, or to take it off the network?

It turns out that my unknown device was my MacBook (part deux)! I had plugged it in to the ethernet for a few seconds and didn't use the ethernet, but apparently it was long enough that the MacBook was assigned an IP. So I have an IP address assigned to my MacBook for the ethernet connection AND for the wireless connection. Ah, the easy answer.
