OS 9 is ancient, and, IIRC, does not support any encryption other than WEP - no WPA.

Sounds right. If you are fine with WEP, then your old ibook should be able to get online. However, WEP is easily broken, which opens all your traffic up for intercept and sniffing.

OTOH, if somebody really wants to get into your wireless network, they WILL get into your wireless network - WPA and access control lists or not.
Think of all this security as a deterrent to the casual passer-by or latent hacker.
Like how locking your car is a deterrent, though it in no way actually stops ANYONE from getting into your car if they really want to, provided they know how to operate a brick or largish rock.

It's kinda hard to break WPA... "Computationally infeasible" is the term used here-more computing power than available on the planet, heat death of the universe timeframe, etc. I would compare WPA to a really, really GOOD lock that will keep all but the most determined, and most well resourced attacker from being able to do anything useful against your network-and even if they were able to do something, it would be out of time sequence or after the expiration of the key they broke (in the case of TKIP). The real threat is not an intrusion, it's social engineering. NOBODY has a "right" to your network but you, and you should think VERY HARD about providing access to anyone you don't absolutely, 100% trust with absolutely every facet of your life.
