I ordered a refurbished airport extreme from apple and installed it myself into my g5 imac. The antenna is plugged in all the way.

For some reason I am getting a much much worse signal from my imac than I am from my c2duo macbook that I have right next to it. I Have searched a lot on here and elsewhere, and I just can't figure out why.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I kind of wish this wasn't moved as I feel this is g5 imac specific. Are these computers notorious for having bad wireless strength? What can I do about it?

Maybe the mod that moved this could have given me some insight instead of just moving it because it says airport in the title?

Nope, if the antenna is plugged in all the way, that rules out the G5 specific angle. And no, the G5 iMac isn't known for having poor reception. However, have you installed the very latest AirPort software yet? The AirPort driver that came with the iMac's copy of OS X may not be as good as the latest one.

I should also mention that that link in the iMac forum will stay there, and EVERYBODY can see it. So if someone is looking at that forum and says "Hey, that's exactly what happened to me!" he can follow the link to this thread. 'Course a more descriptive title would be better, like "Poor Signal Strength On iMac G5", which I can help with too. And the changed title is visible in both forums too. The title is the bait for answers, and I just super charged yours.

As for the root cause, how far is "all the way?" The removal tapes should be in contact with the card-and getting the connector that far in can be tough! The next idea that comes to mind is "where did you get the card from?" Is it direct from Apple and thus guaranteed to work?

Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.

The small plug for the antenna is definitely all the way into the card. However, I suppose the card itself could be seated incorrectly to the socket, although I doubt it. I will take everything apart yet again and double check it.

As for the card, it is a refurbished airport extreme card which I ordered direct from apple's website. The card came with an installation cd which I am guessing contained the newest drivers. I have also checked system update and cannot come up with anything newer. Is there another way to make sure I have the newest drivers?

Thanks.

Also, what do you mean by removal tapes? The clear tab that is connected to the card itself?

Yep. That's it.

It sounds like there could be a problem with the card. Give Apple a call about it.
