hi, i'm movin to the sticks and will have no landline for internet. i'm interested in the sierra air card and the verizon air card and wonder if anyone has had any experience with either one. i'm a current cingular/att customer, but the purchase and plan require a 2 year committment with either provider. also, i'm wondering, if one has the air card, does one also need an isp, ie, can i cancel my earthlink account?

Before you go as far as deciding that you want one of these cards at all, find out how much signal you'll get in "the sticks." If there aren't land lines, that area may be what's gently called "underserved." That means there's nothing-not cable, not phone, nothing. You may not even get any cell signal at all.

I'll bet both AT&T and Verizon are the ISP for their respective card.

hi, thanks for your reply. i was having problems with my cell phone (a very out of date one), which is a dual band model, and thought it was a cingular problem as people with verizon had cell phones that were operable there. my phone was actually operable, but dropped a lot of calls. then my girlfriend with a quad band cingular phone came to visit and she had no problem at all, so i am buying a used, unlocked quad band phone to see how that operates. that's kind of my question... i am out of my 2 year committment with cingular/att, and i would prefer to stay with them for cell service because they have rollover minutes and i would prefer not to get into any more agreements. however, either one of the air cards will require the 2 year committment, so it really boils down to which card interacts with mac well enough, and has the power to pull the signal in. i was just wondering if anyone had had any similar experience.

On how well the two cards work with Macs, I can't help you. Make sure both are physically compatible with your Mac though; the new Macs don't have "PC card" slots, they have "Express card" slots, and the two are not at all compatible.

interesting. there are 2 to 4 models available with each carrier, and at least one with each carrier use an usp port, so that limits the field a little.
