Hello,
I have a little problem, a lot of times mac os x changes my IP adress from 192.XXX.X.XXX to 68.XXXXXXXX which results in me losing access to the internet, until I got to Network preferences and click on renew DHCP lease. I have the impression that it only happens when Transmission is open but I am not so sure about that. Can anyone help me why this keeps happening? I coonect through a Router that is connected to a cable modem, it only happens to one of my computers. Thank you.

What computer model is this happening with, what OS is it running (10.?.?), and what make and model of router are you using? That could make a difference.

The 68 address would be assigned if your ISP was by-passing the router. In other words, the router should get the 68 address and then hand out 192 addresses to any IP device in your house. I don't think your Mac is involved in either of those two scenarios, it sounds like the router isn't doing its job.

It sounds like you have two DHCP servers on your network, and they are fighting eachother. You don't happen to have a computer with "network sharing" turned on, do you? Or have a hub (not a router) plugged into your cable/dsl modem, and then a router plugged into that, do you? Last item... you made sure that your cable modem is plugged into the "WAN" or "Uplink" port on your rouiter, yes?

thanks for your answers...the router is D-link and yes the cable modem is plugged in the WAN port. What I don't understand is how renewing the DHCP lease on my Mac resolves the issue when its just a router issue. No I don't have an additional hub. I have 3 computers hanging on the router, two that run Mac OS X.4.10 and one that runs Ubuntu Linux.

Still sounds odd, the 68 address is a public address. The router should take it. If the Mac ends up with it, then you are right, the other computers would be dead in the water. Renewing your Mac's DHCP lease is basically telling the Mac to get an available address, which the DLink should supply. The problem is that it sounds like the DLink is dropping the ball; sometimes when the Mac asks for an IP address the DLink ignores the request and your Mac gets the 68 address from your cable company.

Sounds like a problem with the Dlink router. Check to see if there's updated firmware available.
