Hey folks
I am temporarily living overseas, out of america, and have run into a little problem. When I go to many websites, like NBC.com or other media websites, like Netflix, they suddenly dont let me watch their videos because I am not in the US.
so my question is: is there a way I can change the ip or something that tricks websites into thinking that I am still in the US? Also, would this be illegal technically?

Is it the web sites or the ISP/country you're in? China, for example, blocks a lot of web sites at their border. Seriously. Where are you anyway?
Your IP comes from your ISP-YOU can't change that at all. Some countries frown on users going through annonymizer sites too, so be very careful about what you try to do.

In the past there have been "cloaks" that you could use to browse websites. But I wouldn't want to enter passwords or anything important in there.
Another option would be to set a up a VPN or something similar somewhere in the US (ask a friend to help you) and then access the website through that. I'm not very sure how it works actually.
I had a similar issue when I tried to access my T-Mobile account while I was in India cause I guess t-mo blocks all IPs outside of the US, or something.

hmm....
No, I'm not in China or any country that is blocking websites. The websites themselves are restricting my access.
I am in Spain, by the way.
I have seen programs that scramble and anonymize your IP, but I don't think they would work unless they keep replacing my current IP with american ones. Any other ideas?

There are possibly a number of reasons you're not being allowed to see what you're looking for, licensing issues among them. Have you considered contacting the web support people from NBC.com or Netflix? If you're out of the country for a short time, they may be able to help you out-or at least explain to you why they have the blocks in place.

If you have a Mac (or a Linux PC) back in the US, open up an ssh connection to it and tunnel your web traffic through that Mac.
If not, use a web proxy located in the US. There are free ones that don't require you to enter any personal information.
Here's a list.
Sys Prefs > Network > Your Network Interface > Advanced... > Proxies > Configure Manually > Web Proxy
Beware though, all your web traffic will then be routed through that proxy server. So keep security in mind.
