!st off let me say I know almost NOTHING about net working
So I want you smart networking people to help me out
I have my imac desktop in my bedroom
it has a wireless connection to the internet thru my linksys router
I have my macbook in the living room
I surf the internet thru the same router
What I want to do is access files on my desktop in the bedroom from my macbook in the living room
However when I do a computer to computer connection I can no longer surf the internet
when I connect back to my network the computer to computer is lost
I want to be able to both surf the net wirelessly AND access files on my computer wirelessly
this can be done out the box right??
thanks in advance

Not quite "out of the box." You have to tell OS X to allow it. In both Leopard and Tiger you go to Sharing Preferences and check file sharing. Now you should be able to share files between the two machines. It's that simple, but for the security of all users it's not enabled by default.

I did that
I'm able to share files between the two computers from my mac book
I just cant surf the internet and share files simultaneously
I have to log off my computer to computer network
then join the wireless network to surf
and vice versa
its either share files OR surf the net
not both
and I want to be able to do both
if possible

It sounds like you're switching your wifi network from infrastructure to a peer to peer network. You don't want to do that.
Turn on sharing, then Go->Connect to Server in Finder on one of your Macs and enter the other's IP address.

I had assumed the OP would be using Finder while simply connected via his wireless router... Like I said, it's very simple, you just have to turn on sharing. After that, it's there and all you have to do is look for it with Finder.

"However when I do a computer to computer connection I can no longer surf the internet
when I connect back to my network the computer to computer is lost" in the OP's post tipped me off that they're probably changing wifi networks instead.

Yep. I missed that. I didn't associate "computer to computer" with ad hoc as I usually do.
