I am interested in buying a TimeCapsule when it is released, but will probably need to make some changes to my network to take advantage of it. Right now, all my Macs have 802.11g cards installed. I am investigating the feasibility of upgrading two machines and creating a network with a G and N 'zone.'

Here is the equipment that I am working with:
2 20" iMac CD (upgradable to n-spec)
2 12" PowerBooks (will not be upgraded...I dont want to use a usb dongle)
1 Beige G3, upgraded to a G4 w/a 3rd party wireless PCI card (this old beast is running 10.4...not sure about upgradability of PCI card)
1 AirportExtreem (802.11g)
2 Airport Express (one as WDS, one airtunes)

So, I'd like to upgrade those machines that can be and buy a TimeCapsule. Because some machines can't be upgraded, I would like to make part of may network n-only. I'm not sure were to start (other than MacNN ), but have some questions:

1. Is this arrangement possible?
2. If I can set-up a split network, will the g and n devices be able to talk to one another? (e.g. n-equipped iMac play through AirTunes)
3. Can a network device (bridge?) allow the g-equipped Macs to use TimeCapsule?

TIA

Yes, it'll work and your machines will be able to see each other across G-only and N-only network segments — if you set it up correctly. Here's what you want to do after you get your Time Capsule:
1. configure your Airport Extreme for bridging mode, not distributing IPs, then plug it into your Time Capsule via Ethernet.
2. Airport Express (WDS) should continue to work as normal as a WDS for your Extreme
3. Airport Express (airtunes) should also be fine.
4. Configure Time Capsule for N-only.

What this does is make your Extreme act as a bridge to the single LAN created by Time Capsule. Allowing the Extreme to distribute IPs would create a separate subnet, effectively walling off your G from your N.

Thanks for the reply. Would this set-up allow the G machines to use Time Capsule?

BTW, I found an n-spec card for the beige. This machine is acting as a files server/iTunes server & jukebox. I can't believe that this computer is still plugging along after 10 years (this spring). The N card will let it go on...forever. HAR HAR HAR! <evil laugh>

From what I read on the product page, it looks like yes.
