I need a way to work from home, connection two 10.4 Macs. Is there a free VPN or SFTP or any other secure way of sharing directories remotely? I'm looking for a guide or walkthrough that suggests some apps. FREE apps, remember. I tried googling it and searching these forums but haven't found much.

So, you are trying to access data on those Macs, and not use apps installed on them, right ?
What kind of firewall / router is installed on the Mac network ?
Do you have control over port forwarding in this firewall / router ?
VPN will most likely not be free, and it required either special hardware or extensive knowledge to install free VPN solutions (UNIX based).
I'd say that an AFP connection tunneled over SSH is your best solution. This is free, but not necessarily easy to use. You should be familiar with Unix and the Terminal.
An alternative to AFP over SSH is using Hamachi. It's like a VPN, but nothing for the faint hearted, you need good terminal skills.
If you want it easy, you would need to use LogMeIn Pro, But that will cost you $ 70 / year, which you don't seem to be willing to spend.

Set your router to forward requests on the ports you need (AFP, SSH, whatever), setup a dyndns account, point your router to this account, and you'll have a permanent domain name you can use to access your Mac.
I personally prefer SSHfs/FUSE over AFP, I find it much faster and more flexible for me.

Can you be a little more specific? Is one Mac at home and another Mac at a remote location? Are you looking simply for a way to push/pull files from each of the Macs?
I've just started to take advantage of my webhost's SVN capabilities to set up a repository on the remote server and syncing both my desktop and laptop over SSH+SVN which works pretty smoothly.

Forget thrid-party or commercial solutions. It's all built right into OS X.
Use ssh to create a secure tunnel (open up ssh to a LAN Mac on your router if necessary). Set up either port forwarding or configure local forwards (AFP is port 548, VNC is 5900). Then use AFP or VNC as if the Macs were on your LAN. Simple (and free) as that.
