Hi All,
I had a temporary fix to this problem using the Open DNS servers, but this morning i went to log on to my internet at home and again its not working. Through internet connect it says that everything is connected (802.11x connected also) but in preferences net work it says that its using a self assigned IP address and may not connect. I'm using a wireless Dlink WAN with WEP enabled.
Like i said it was working earlier in the week and now its not anymore. All the other WAN connected computers are working fine (this is the only mac). I'm going to see if i can openDNS the router when i get home but other than that i haven't any idea what to do next (besides maybe a new router?)
Any input would be appreciated thanks.
(im new to this forum and it only showed 2 pages in this networking topic so if there are previous threads that answer this question please feel free to me

Have you...
>Restarted your router?
>Restarted your modem?
>Restarted your computers?
And get rid of WEP-it's poo on a stick. It is seriously very easy to break in only minutes with software that's easily available on line. Use WPA-it's not at all vulnerable and better than that, it's password function is part of the standard so all your computers can use exactly the same password (unlike WEP where you have to tell an AirPort card that you're entering a hex code or worse, having to translate your Mac's plain-text password into hex for your PCs).

I've tried resetting all of that and EVEN GOT A NEW ROUTER!!! it does the same damn thing! When i change the security settings to anything other than WEP it says an error occured while trying to connect to SSID. This is frusterating seeing how just yesterday i was online at home!
yes bluetooth is off

Is the ROUTER set for WPA? Use a simple password for now-you can improve it later. The ROUTER is what determines what kind of security the wireless network has, so changing anything at the client side is useless.
Try this: set the router for WPA with a really simple password (like your name to start) and see if each computer can connect, one at a time. Note which ones get connected easily and which (if any) have problems, including any error messages. Come back with your results and we'll dissect them and hopefully figure this out pretty quickly. It's important to go at this methodically, one step at a time.

You were totally on the right track. I was impatient enough to call netgears 24 hour tech support and the guy talked me right through it.
We started by making a new SSID and use WPA PSK TKIP (i think) with a simple password and bam it connected.
I dont understand why my macbook wouldnt even connect to the router i had previously with no security at all! It just said (an error occurred while trying to connect to SSID) but whatever.

It's possible that your MacBook's AirPort card wasn't really able to handle WEP-I've seen reports of that sort of thing. Good riddance to WEP, but it's pretty confusing when it happens.
