We use AD here at the college and all the Mac's are setup with AD and all works great. This year they do not have access to their netowrk drive.

With the next school year ahead we are testing OS X 10.5 and I have been playing with the AD plug'n which I have found to be great as it was with Tiger, but I'm looking at the mounting of the users Active Directory network drive.

It works fine and does mount when I use the AD plug'n, but it places the folder link in the dock. Is there a wayto make this a mounted drive so that when the user is in an application like Office, when they go to save they can see that mounted drive network space.

I ask this because they can not select the link in the dock. They need to select the server that is mounted in the "Shared" section, go to the student "home" data base and then sift through hundreds of folders to find theirs. Though there are hundreds of other users folders they can not be accessed, but it's a pain to need to go through such steps to save.... plus try to explain the process to a student who is new and not a great Mac user.

if this can not be resolved, we will need to drop the user netowrk home drive again this next year, but hope to find a fix.

Tks,

There are a number of ways to do this, and almost all of them involve a startup script. It sounds like the simplest would be to add the home directory to the users "places" section of the sidebar. You can do this by figuring out the plist at ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist. I am sorry to say that that is going to involve working out how to programatically create alias data (I did that once, but have lost my notes).
