Hey,
I was just wondering whether I could plug an ordinary ethernet cable with internet into the airport extreme base station/airport express and make my own wireless network from it, even though the ethernet wouldnt be coming directly from the internet box, probably from a router or something. I was just wondering as it would be tres useful in a uni room with one ethernet port but no wireless.

Thanks.

Even though your description is a bit confusing ( ), YES, it is (should be) possible.
You need to turn on Internet Sharing in the Preferences, shared to Ethernet, and turn off DHCP on the AXP / AEXT.

I hope I'm not missing something, but in theory, it should work.

Yes, you can, that's pretty much what it's designed for.

turtle: I think you're confused. No need to do anything in Internet Sharing or disable DHCP.

It would be very helpful if our dear OP would be a bit more specific about what he has now and where he wants to connect his new device. Also, how he wants to use this would be kind of important; will it be so that wireless computers can share files with wired computers? will he need to share printers and such?

Oh, that's possible

However, what if you have DHCP enabled on your Mac ?
Does the AExpress recognize that and automatically turn it off ?

Are you sure you don't need to enable Internet Sharing ? It's turned off by default.

Well, this is my understanding of his desired setup:

Router ---IEEE 802.3--- Mac ---IEEE 802.3--- AEB ~~~802.11g/n~~~ other device

Or maybe:
Router --- Ethernet --- AEB? This is why I (maybe not too directly) asked what the setup should be. The wording in the post is vague enough that both your and my interpretation could be valid.
