Let me begin by saying I love Apple. I have talked at least 12 people into buying Macs, I have three Macs of my own and run a Windows consulting company from my MacBook Pro 17" 2.4 GHz machine which I love. I know some people will read this and say "Dude just won't use Windows servers!" but that is unrealistic in these cases.

That being said I can't stand the Apple Airport Extreme router. I have it at home and purchased it several months ago for a Macintosh creative company before really researching it. Here are my issues:

1. Why can't I set internal DNS from the DHCP server? This drives me nuts!! I have a Windows server at both locations and have to manually set DNS for each machine to resolve internal addresses.

2. You can't disable DHCP on the router. It would be so much easier if I could disable DHCP and use the Windows machine so I can pass out things like DNS, WINS, WINS resolution order, time server, etc.

3. You can't make a single change with rebooting the entire router.

4. Connecting over PPTP to a Windows server STILL doesn't work (ports 1723 and GRE) so the only way to get VPN working is to use a Default Host which is HUGE security hole and forces additional software on the Windows server.

5. The logging is terrible and for some reason if you choose to use an external Syslog server (which I do) you can only choose 1 level of logging to report.

I am no genius so maybe some of these issues are resolved or I just don't know what I am talking about- I would much rather have fixes than complaints so if anyone knows any answers please let me know. Thanks!

Apple products are meant to be easy to use. Especially the networking stuff is very basic, almost plug & play. 99% of the users don't need to set up internal DHCP server or connect a syslog server.

For the kind of stuff a hackable linux-based router would be the much better option.

Exactly. Well put.

My biggest problem is with the bugs, not the features or lack thereof, that don't seem to go away.
