So, setting up my TC didn't go so smoothly.

I already have wireless courtesy of a netgear adsl modem/router so my original plan was to hang the tc off the back of the Netgear via an ethernet cable, however I would rather have it elsewhere in the room. No problemo the TC setup gives the option of letting the TC join an existing wireless network. In this case a (temporarily for testing purposes) unsecure Netgear network.

So far so good, the setup sees the netgear wireless network but as soon as the TC reboots it's gone from view. The TC itself displays a green light but no sign of it on the netgear network.

Any thoughts?

When you say "it's gone from view," you must mean that it is no longer visible in Airport Utility.

Can you connect to the internet?

Can you mount the TC's HD/make backups via Time Machine?

If not, can you "see" the TC when connected to it via ethernet?

Yes gone from view mens it no longer shows up in the airport setup utility, or the finder

It does show up when connected via ethernet and will backup via ethernet. It just doesn't seem to be joining the netgear network. I guess "join existing wireless network" actually means "join exisitng Airport wireless network".

I have yet to run into a non-Apple Wireless router that makes this easy - or even possible.

So, yes, that's basically what it means.
