I need to set up a wireless network for my flatmate so she can share my cable modem connection and I'm hoping I don't have to purchase any additional equipment. My previous internet connection was via DSL, but I've recently switched back to cable - and forgot that the DSL gear doesn't use ethernet for the 'in' connection :-(

Here's what I have.

1. A cable modem - coaxial into the modem and ethernet into my iMac (it's a new one with 802.11n)
2. A Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless-G router

Now I know I can share my internet connection wirelessly via Airport on my iMac - but I'd very much like to not have it on all the time. Is there any way I can route the signal into the ADSL modem and then broadcast that for my flatmate and her laptop - or is it time to buy either a cable modem (or perhaps a Time Capsule)?

Thanks for your help!

If your DSL modem accepts ethernet and can be configured to act as just a router only (not a modem), then it should work. If it doesn't, then it won't, and you'll need a stand-alone router, such as a Linksys.

Probably not, buy you can probably get more for the ADSL modem/wifi on eBay/similar than it costs to buy an 802.11g router.

Thanks for the top tip. I haven't completely sussed it out, but I did as you suggested.

I plugged the ethernet coming out of the cable modem into one of the ports on the ADSL modem/router. I then turned on my iMac's airport signal and connected to the router. I opened the WAN connection config page for the router and I ignored the usual setup assistant and enabled the 'router', entered the DNS numbers for my internet service and was instantly able to surf the internet via the Airport connection.

I reckon the next step is to set up the wireless encryption, but I'm just chuffed that it actually works as it should.

Thanks for the help!
