Can anyone recommend an external wifi antenna? (802.11B/G or N) For use in my work truck, on a wireless college campus, to get a more reliable signal, and possibly some direction finding. A search has uncovered:

hField Technologies, Inc.
Hawking Technologies Store

Does anyone have any experience with these?

Thanks for the help,
Gern

First, you have to start with what connectors your equipment has. Not all antennas work with all hardware because there are about three "standard" connectors in wide use. What kind of hardware are you planning on connecting your future antenna to?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I will be connecting it to a 12" iBook. Probably use the usb port.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind with this sort of hardware. They are external wireless adapters, not just antennas (I didn't spend enough time reading the links the first time around), and that means added overhead. While they both support Macs, how well they do this is open to debate lacking any testimonials.

Finally, while I'm sure you are completely up front about your intended usage, this kind of device lends itself to WAR driving and illicit use of wireless networks-that's a Bad Thing. Tread lightly when you mess with this sort of thing.

Well, I tried the HField antenna and returned it. I work in a 6 story bldg in a Columbus and was hoping to extend my Macbook's range it. I saw no improvement and thought the device was cheap feeling. The mounting clamp never worked right anyways. I returned it for a refund.
