I have a problem with Apple File Sharing. I have an iMac that is sharing out a folder called "tobyfoote". It used to also share the entire "Macintosh HD" too, but I have since removed this from the iMac sharing list.

Unfortunately, the "Macintosh HD" is still somehow being exported, as I can still see and access/use it on my MBP. I've talked with Apple tech support in India without success -- even though they speak English, there still seems to be a language barrier.

I'm very familiar with UNIX/Linux, and I'm used to an /etc/exports file, but there doesn't seem to be one on the Mac.

Does anyone have any suggestions? As a side note, I added another external HD to the iMac and named it "Iomega", and amazingly, it's also being shared, even though I NEVER shared it from the iMac.

If you are logging into your iMac from your MBP using an iMac admin account, you will be able to see everything.

Also, what OS version are you using on the iMac?

I found my answer, but it wasn't the answer I was looking for.

It appears that if you connect using an admin account, you will see all Mac-formatted HDs, which is why I was seeing "Macintosh HD" and "Iomega". If you connect as a non-admin account, it doesn't show these shares.

Needless to say, this is a security concern. I don't want to share out my entire disk drive, but I *HAVE TO* if I want to share my home directory. Anyone who has network access could hack my password and get to all my data, not just the home directory that I want to share. I'm quite surprised this is the way MacOS was setup. UNIX/Linux does not do this. It only shares out folders that you include in the /etc/exports files. I hope this is corrected in a future release of MacOS.

PS - I am using Leopard 10.5.2 on all my machines.
