So, I loves me my new iPod Touch, but there aren't a lot of steady wifi connections reachable from my apartment, and I don't have Airport in the house. However, my G5 does have an Airport card, and I shared my wired connection through my Airport card earlier today. My worry is that I'm essentially sharing my connection wide open to anyone who wants to come snooping.

Is there a way to secure a connection through this manner? I couldn't find anything poking around System Preferences.

I was going to say that you should just turn on encryption using WPA, but I just looked at my iMac's sharing preferences and it doesn't seem to allow for WPA encryption when sharing through AirPort... This is most disturbing-but probably an oversight on my part.

Unless I'm missing something, it looks like sharing an internet connection is an all or nothing choice.

So, turns out you can create a normal Airport network through internet sharing, but I can't get my iPod to connect to it. Could be an iPod limitation, could be my lack of experience. Don't know yet.

When you turn on Internet Sharing via Airport, click on the "Airport options" button in the preference pane.

This allows you to secure the network - WEP *only*, though (no WPA - anyone know why?).

I've been using this for years now in lieu of the crappy D-Link router I finally threw out.
