Bear with me...

I take my mac abroad, and wish to watch some of these 'iplayer' and 'itv catch up' services promoted on telly that let you watch tv on your macs etc etc.
problem lies in when i go abroad, the IP{ address i use is overseas. Is there anyway i can 'trick' the UK sites to thinking I am in the UK? Someone I know mentioned proxy servers, but non of the wiser... any layman terms help out there??

The IP that gets checked comes from the ISP you connect through. When abroad, are you using your home ISP? These services could be assuming your locale by the language you choose too. Or it could be that since the two services you mention are from the BBC and ITV that they simply figure you have to be British...

Even if you setup a VPN or otherwise routed traffic through to your home connection, chances are the upload speeds would be too slow to stream video without major stuttering.

You could get (purchase) commercial VPN service in your home country. From time to time I use VPNout, which will make my IP appear as if it's coming from their state. You might have something like that for the UK.
