I'm trying to create a home wireless network between a Windows XP notebook and my MacBook Pro. We are in the same workgroup and i can get into the Mac from the PC, but i cannot connect to the PC from the Mac. I have tried a number of different ways (see below), and i always get the same error: First, i am prompted for a username and password, which i enter, and then i get the message "The alias "[DNS Name]" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
Any and all suggestions are welcome! Thanks to all who have an idea.
The ways i've attempted to connect to the PC (from above): A basic connection through finder, connect to server using smb://[DNS name], smb://[IP Address], cifs://[DNS], and all the same beginnings with /[username] at the end.

have you tried the IP followed by the name of the shared folder?
Example smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.x/Shared

I have tried smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.x/[Username] with the hopes that it would provide access to all of that user's (the only user, by the way) stuff, and thus the computer. Same result, though.
I just tried smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.x/Username/My Documents and smb://xxx.../My Documents with the same result. Thanks for the idea.
I have also wanted to mention that i've attempted to make connections with windows computers in the past (my MacBook is 2 years old, now) and always have this exact issue.

Lucky, you don't mention either what version of OS X you are running or how you're connecting the PC and MBP (direct, wired, wireless?). That might be helpful information.
Anyway, I had troubles like this after I upgraded to 10.5. The 10.5.2 update fixed it.

Sorry about that, I'm running 10.4.11. I am attempting to connect wirelessly, as our network is a wireless one.
