Machine I-mac running OS X 10.5.4
Internet provider Windstream DSL
Router Speedstream 4200
Wireless Airport Extreme

I can update the router per instructions for Speedstream 5200.
All is well and working fine, until I put the I-mac to sleep, restart, or shut down and start up. At this point I have no internet service at all, this is true even if I leave the router plugged directly into the I-mac.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How do you get your Internet connection back? That will tell us a lot about what's stopping (or more likely not "restarting") when you do the sleep/wake bit. I think you're experience something I call "the infamous Airport Won't Connect After Sleep bug", and there are a few ways to deal with it. But I'd need to know what it's actually doing and how you get it back again before I point out what I think you should do.

I can update the router per instructions for Speedstream 5200.
All is well and working fine, until I put the I-mac to sleep, restart, or shut down and start up. At this point I have no internet service at all, this is true even if I leave the router plugged directly into the I-mac.

Steps that I took are:

1. Plug 4200 Router directly into the I-Mac, and access the router with Safari and change the DNS to Open DNS.
2. Save the changes and reboot the router. Exit Safari
3. Reboot the I-Mac – check to make sure all is working and using Open DNS servers.
4. Unplug the direct Ethernet connection and run it to the airport extreme. Note I have another Ethernet cable running from the airport extreme to the I-mac.
5. Put the I-mac to sleep.
6. Wake up the I-mac and no internet and system preferences under network tells me Ethernet has no I-P address.
7. I reboot computer and reboot router and get my internet back.

Thanks so much for your help, as I have set system back to original.

Problem Solved!
I did a reset of the Router and then went back through set up of the Airport Extreme. I did not replace the cat cable from the Extreme to the I-mac.
