Hi everyone.
I'm tearing my hair out on this one. Done searches and tried a ton of things.
Mother in Law has DSL (Windstream) and just got a new airport extreme for her macbook pro. AE cannot find the network when plugged into the Speedstream. If she is directly hooked in via ethernet, it works fine on her laptop and can surf the web. But we cannot get the AE to work, it cant find the network.
I download the manual for the 4200 and tried putting it into bridge mode, but that did not work and we lost connection.
Does anyone here have any suggestions? I have been working on this for 3 hours now and tech support for Windstream says its not there fault.
Basically we have an ethernet port going out of the Speedstream into the WAN on the AE. When we run Airport Utility we cannot get a connection to any wireless device
Thanks
Arn

So you can't get the MacBook Pro to detect the Airport extreme at all? Or does it just not connect to the internet once it is connected?

When we run the Airport Setup it cant find the airport at all, so it's not connected.

Airport Utility does a poor job of finding Airport Extreme. Connect your Mac directly to one of its LAN ports. AU should find it now and let you configure it.

We will try that, thanks.
The thing that gets me is that the airport extreme just flashes amber (meaning there is no network detected) when its plugged into the Speedstream 4200.
I'll try your suggestion and let you know.

You may well need to reboot the speedstream before it will work with the new device (airport extreme) connected to it.

Yes, a reboot may be required before the modem is happy with your router. You may also need to configure PPPoE since it's DSL.

Wow. I was able to get it to setup with the ethernet hooked up.
But now since it's DSL how do I setup the PPPoE? From what I read the Speedstream 4200 is part router and part modem. It apparently just works when its plugged in and reset. Is the username and password for this stored in the settings for 4200? And if so, how do I translate that info into the Extreme?
Sorry for asking all these questions, I'm helping over the phone (they are in Texas and Im in L.A.)
I went through the easy setup and switched the Airport to bridge mode, but the wireless is still not working on it. If I hook up the Macbook Pro to the ethernet port on the Extreme it sees the internet just fine, but if I choose the wireless network, then it just times out when it tries to join the wireless network.
Thanks so much everyone for your help
