i uploaded a movie on my time capsule (which is set up to use only "n" mode).
there is a notable lag in playing the x264 .mkv movie every 5-6 seconds.

should it be like that?
what can i do to improve the perfomance?

A "lag" or a "drop out?" I would say that big movies would be problematic when streamed over slower networks, but N speeds should work fine, but that's just a supposition because I haven't tried anything about that stuff. But a "lag" is when you issue a command, like "pause" and it takes a noticeable amount of time for the pause to happen, while a "drop out" is when playback ceases on its own. Knowing which you're experiencing will help determine what's going on.

It depends very much on what kind of x264 file that is. What is the required transfer rate? If I take a movie that requires 8MB/s I can't stream it without lags over my n network either ( I get around 6 MB/s sustained).

And what kind of player are you using? VLC? In my experience if the player doesn't cache well and your network shows inconsistent transfer rates that's a mix guaranteed to give you playback lags.

Where do you get 60+Mbps H.264 files? 4k cinema?
