Whenever I close Safari, Airport loses the internet connection, and when I open Safari again, I get the "your computer is not connected to the internet".
To be sure: it never drops it while on the internet. Only when I close Safari, it loses it.
Then I have to restart modem and wireless router, a d-link WBR-1310, version b.
Thanks!

Something that may or may not help in troubleshooting this problem: in your router configuration, are you hiding the broadcasting of your SSID (network name) ?

The network name wasn't an option for the router set-up. Only for the Airport network settings.

Create a new user account on your Mac and see if the problem persists under that user.

Thanks, I'll try that.
It's really weird. I can go a day now without this thing happening, and then - back to a crawl (which means me crawling under the desk for a router/modem restart).
Probably some kind of fitness software on my iMac...

Is this what shows in your AirPort menu item?, cause that's what I usually get, I don't even have to close Safari, it just happens… I can be browsing the web to notice a given site doesn't load and there's the culprit, the AirPort scanning thing

Airport scans every time you click on its menu.

But the connection stops working in before of that. It also happens to a friend of me.

I don't think the connections actually stops while it scans, but I have noticed that "Transmit Rate" (option-click AP menu to show hidden details) drops to zero and accordingly your throughput decreases while it scans. As soon as scanning stops the rates go back up again. At least this is the same behavior I have seen on all Macs I use.

Interesting. I just confirmed that 0 rate also with iStat menus: my up/down rates dropped to 0 until the scan completed.

I actually never noticed that, but will look out for it.
Usually it is on start-up. Let's say I use the internet connection, then close Safari, work on something else, and then, after hours, sometimes after as little as 30 minutes, I click the Safari icon, and I get the "you aren't connected to the internet" message.
Then I have to restart both router and modem, and then it'll work.

I found a way that improves Airport reliability infinitely.
Put Safari as a start-up item, check hide, so it won't hop into your face and teases you to go surfing instead of working.
This way, Safari logs on right away, and since I am doing this, I haven't had to crawl under the table and fight my way through the connector jungle.
