I know the connection is being made because Airport asks me if I want to login to the named network, I get bars, etc ...but for-the-life-of-me; I cannot get the utility to scan it: says nothing is connected?! So, I am totally unable to adjust the settings. I've gotten two of these early base stations w/modem because I'm in the boonies and need dialup. ONE should work?! I have the LAN connect or not - no difference. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Connect via the LAN or WAN ports. Also make sure you're using the Graphite & Snow Airport Utility. It's different than the Leopard built-in Airport Utility.
What version of Mac OS X are you using?

Ya, I specifically downloaded it after an earlier posting. I'm running: OS 10.5.5
One of these is all white, the other with a silver Apple logo. I tried both with/without the LAN cable... Both these units are password protected so I can 'see' them on my desktop Mac by their network names in the Airport menu but I have zero control because I am unable to get the utility to 'see' either base station. The later even acts like it's dialing a modem...but for whom, I do not know? I've cruised Apple help but nothing like this comes up.... Puzzled?! I have no next move..

If one is dialing using its modem, it's probably configured to dial in the event of Internet access attempts. You can soft reset both of those units. They will then get a default password. But if the airport utility can't even see them, it won't help in trying to configure them.

When connecting with a LAN cable, did you try both the LAN and WAN ports on the base stations?

No-Go. I tried the cable in both ports on the base; neither AP Utility nor AP Utility for G&S can scan my base station. I can see the network in the pulldown .. and when I 'connect' it want to dial ...but I cannot get a pwd and re-config it. Circuit City had a new .n base station for $100 ..but that has no modem.

You may have more luck if you soft or hard reset the base stations. Years ago when I had these models a soft/hard reset helped my airport utility to recognize them.

Honestly, you'd think this would just work. Nothing annoys me more than than Apple hardware/software that doesn't live up to the "it just works" promise. Far more disappointing than buggy products from other hardware or software manufacturers.

Yeah. The pre-Leopard airport utility has never been quality. The current version for current hardware is passable, but just barely.

Just hard reset the thing and configure it with AP Utility. Make sure you connect to it through an Ethernet cable to its WAN port. Only once that's all finished, connect to it wirelessly. Enter the SSID manually and select 'remember network'.

Simon: Got it. I was always connecting the cable to the LAN port ..and the WAN was able to allow me to re-config the settings in the base station.
I am only confused about one more thing: before Airport - I simply plugged the phone jack into the back of my iMac G5 .. now the phone cable is plugged into the base station.
The base station is dialing the correct # because I can see the # stream across the top next to the airport symbol on the iMac ...and when I pick up the phone I can hear the handshake, but my iMac does not seem to be getting the connection?
The entire setup was done on the iMac thru admin .. the correct network is chosen .. the iMac can see the base ...but I'm not getting an internet connection. It's as if the iMac is still not totally connected? Do I somehow have to disconnect the modem in the iMac? Sorry to share this agony....
