I would love to be able to perform Internet speed tests with a minimum of clicking, waiting, and overhead. Unfortunately, all of the speed tests I've used have one or more of those issues:

Speakeasy
Several clicks and annoying animations

My ISPs Own Test
is one-click if bookmarked, but its results are suspiciously and consistently high

Speedtest.net
Involves several clicks before you get started, plus annoying and unnecessary Flash animations.

Is there a better alternative?

http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1

but I just noticed that's the same as Speakeasy's. If you don't want animations and clicking, what exactly are you looking for? They're all like that these days.

How about a command-line version or one that starts automatically (based on preset preferences) without any clicking? Or how about a PHP script or an AppleScript?

DSL Reports' speed tests also include others beyond Speakeasy...

On topic, I don't know of any speed test sites that you could invoke with a command line.

This one is pretty good. Not quite what I described, but it is quick to get started at least. No idea if it's accurate.

Accuracy is easy to check: run MySpeed and compare it to the results from several others. While they'll all vary a bit, "accurate" ones should be relatively close. And keep in mind that sites in different geographic locations will give different results because of the differing infrastructure between you and the sites.
