hi guys i have recently replaced my emac powerpc g4 with a new imac 2.8ghz computer. on my previous mac my ethernet connection worked fine but since hooking up my ethernet connection with my new mac, i no longer have the internet anymore. i have checked my internet connection in the network preferences and it is showing a active ethernet connection, but i cant access any web pages in my browser. i am currently using safari to access the internet and i live in a student block where we all access the internet using our own ethernet connection. if anyone has any ideas of why this problem is happening and how it can be fixed, i would be most appreciative.

Did you have to sign up your old Mac to be able to use it? If the DHCP server is handing out IPs according to MAC addresses that would explain why you have a connection but can't get on the internet.

hi mate yeah i did have to give them my ip address when i first moved in but after a couple of weeks i had a similar problem because some how i had the same ip address as someone else, which i think might be the same reason why im getting the same problem.

Are you getting a valid IP or a do you have a self-assigned one?

Have you done an nslookup on the IP?

how do u do a nslookup on the ip?

In a shell type
nslookup xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is your IP.

The answer will be the name the name server connects to that IP.
