Hi All, can an ethernet switch go bad?
I've been having trouble with my LAN, and I've discovered that one major problem (my NAS no longer being seen) can be solved by unplugging it from my 10/100baseT switch and plugging it instead into my ISDN modem/router, which just happens to have four 10/100baseT ports. If I plug the NAS back into the switch, it can't be seen again (power cycling the switch, using different ports and different cables doesn't help).
This is a very simple switch that I've had running for about 2 years, it's not configurable (so I haven't accidentally changed some setting), and I haven't added or taken anything away from the LAN in quite a while. I just started having various problems spontaneously a couple of weeks ago.
So, can a switch go bad?
I've been thinking about upgrading to a gigabit ethernet switch anyway, but I'd still like to know why a piece of hardware that has no moving parts, and isn't configurable, suddenly stopped working properly.
Cheers!
Chas

Yes, like all hardware, they can go bad. Even GBit ethernet switches are cheap these days, so I'd upgrade to one of those.

Wow, fast answer! (as usual :-)
Thanks for the info, time to educate myself as to best brands of gigabit switches (any suggestions?)
Cheers!

Switches are generally very reliable but they can and do fail in weird ways.
How many ports do you need?
I like the D-link "green nonsense" gigabit switches; they're about $5/port.

You know, trying to diagnose these LAN problems has been an exercise in frustration. I tried different cables, removed items from the Lan, reset everything (software and hardware)... except for the switch ('cause what can go wrong with a piece of equipment like that, right?). I never suspected it.
Thanks for the recommendation for the D-Link ("we're so environmentally friendly") range, I'll pick one up (I only need 8 ports).
Cheers!

… or also 3Com or Netgear (the `blue' line-up).

Funny you should mention Netgear, as the retailer I'm using (ebuyer) doesn't have the D-Link 8-port router, so I'm going to order a Netgear "ProSafe GS108 8-port Gigabit Desktop Switch" instead. Reviews are positive (if they can be trusted :-)
Cheers!
