hi, I've been using internet with no problem for long time on my ppc 10.4.11 but today I was using it and it dropped the connection. I rebooted it and it came back but now it sees the network and it has signal but i can go only to google, everyting else it takes for ever and it doesnt load. What can I do? I have a mackbook with super full in the same room so I dont understand what's up. Somebody told me to check the dns settings but I cant find it.
Im connecting using the aiport modem inside the computer to my wireless modem from AT&T model 2wire getaway 2701HG-B Gateway. So bottom line is I have 2 macs and one has full signal and one doesn't see my home network without changing anything at all.

any help will be much appreciated

thanks guys

Welcome to our forums!

What you're describing sounds like a DNS problem. The Domain Name Service system is what translates your browser's requests for URLs (like "www .macnn. com") into an Internet IP address (like 207.58.150.187).

Your ISP provides at least one and maybe several DNS server addresses-automatically most of the time-for your computer to use. Your Mac also stores the last bazillion or so DNS searches for faster lookups. Both of these features can become corrupted or simply broken, and your browsing will suffer for it.

It sounds mostly like your DNS cache has become corrupted, and that's something you can do something about. It's pretty simple, requiring only a single line command in Terminal. Read the detailed directions here. This should fix any cache problem by flushing (emptying) the stored lookups. You may see some very minor delays in your first hour or so of browsing after you do this, but if the problem is the cache, it will certainly fix it. If it isn't the cache, this doesn't hurt anything and does tell you that it isn't a problem with your Mac. Come on back and let us know either way-fixing DNS server settings would be the next step, and that too is pretty easy to do.

You could try manually supplying a DNS server entry for your network.

Use http://www.opendns.com/:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

So, wait, I re-read your post above, and I'm confused:

* it has signal but i can go only to google
* [one has full signal] and one doesn't see my home network without changing anything at all

So, are you connected via Airport or not ?

Since you have two Macs on the same network, what happens when you try to ping one Mac from the other ?
Also, did you try to connect via ethernet, just to see what happens ?

guys, thanks for the help. I just found out my brother left a metal frame behind the modem. It was killing the signal. I moved it and everything is fine now. I couldnt believe a little metal frame would cause such interference.

thanks for the help!!!!!

Amazing what things can break computer networks.

I still don't understand how that metal frame shielded everything but Google.

The force of Google must be strong
