Hi guys,

I was browsing for a while (at least a month) without finding a good solution to the problem.

I had a 80 GB of data on an hard disk to backup for the 1st time on a 1 TB Time Capsule, and i started doing the first backup with ethernet cable, but it took more than 6 days without completing (almost 65 GB in 6 days... impossible!!!)

The problem is that Time Capsule is a good solution, but it is even so "embedded" that you cannot view what's going wrong.

I found myself a solution very easy: splitting the backups!

1) Plug your ethernet cable and be sure your Time Capsule is updated with latest firmware. Many previuos fw had many problems reguarding speed of backup during "conclusive phase".

2) open Time Machine preferences in the Preferences pane, and click on Options

3) start adding the biggest folders into the "Do not backup" place. normally Music, Picture and Video folders are some of the biggest ones. I suggest you to remove even System for the 1st backup

4) activate Time Machine with activate button and let your Time Capsule do the 1st backup. Initially i did a backup only of Documents (around 5 GB) to see if this method was working.

5) as the 1st backup finish, click again on Time Machine preferences and remove the folders. I did mostly 1 by 1. My Music folder was about 28 GB, my Application was 21 GB. By doing this you will gradually backup your folders, but if something goes wrong you still have your precedent backups available.

6) as you removed all your folders from the "Do not backup" window, just leave Time Capsule do the work for what you bought it: automatic backups!!!

A few notes about this stupid process:
- It works!! With this method i backud up 80 GB almos in 20 hours (much less then my 6 days in the previous attempt...)
- The first backup is too intensive, and if something goes wrong, all the backup will LOCK! And if you hit interrupt, you will have to start over!
- splitting backups will let you continue to unplug your mac, as 1 backup is over! It's horrible to have to wait for DAYS without being able to use your mac. I said use because of the risks related to 1st backup

I hope this was helpful

I've moved your post to a new thread, since the original thread was over a year old (zombie).

Also, this doesn't make sense. What machine are you backing up? There is no reason 80 GB should take days, especially over ethernet. Something else is going on here.

Steve
Guess I finally got that fifth star!

1.1MBps is nothing to be excited about.
Mac update estimates: MacBook Pro 1Q10 (quad core Nehalem [Clarksfield]); MacBook 1Q10 (Arrandale); MacBook Air 1Q10 (Arrandale LV); Mac Pro/Xserve 1Q10 (6 core Westmere, 64+GB RAM); iMac 3Q10 (quad core everywhere); Mac mini 2010
