Im running 10.5.8 on my MacPro

I have FiOS connected to the machine

I notice now when nothing is connected, ie an internet program that I get about 400B/s up and 600B/s down

where is this going? is there a way to tell? the only app that seems to be open is Activity monitor ( to see the apps) and SystemUIServer

any ideas?

thanks

some level of <1KB activity is normal between computer and router or, if directly connected, between computer and modem. If you're curious about the specifics, I'd run a packet sniffer (Packet Peeper is good) to see what's flying around to/from your computer.

What you are probably are things like Bonjour and NetBIOS (the Windows share discovery protocol) checking for other computers out there. You can trace the packets, and you might even find some interesting things, but most/all of it is likely to be innocuous.

Wireshark is good, too (used to be called Ethereal):

Wireshark: Go deep.
