I just bought a new iMac, but after setting it up it cant see the N network I have set up. I have a time capsule running a dual band g/n. I dont belive it is a problem with the network because i have a MBP that can see both just fine. I have gone to
Utilities->Network Utilitiy->Airport(en1) and it shows my model as "wireless network adapter (802.11 a/b/g/n).

Does anyone know why i cant connect?

Thanks for the help.

Instead of trying to select your network from the list, enter the exact name.

AP menu > Join Other Network...
or
Sys Prefs > Network > AirPort > Network Name: > Join Other Network...

Check 'Remember this network'.

Try several times. Try turning AP off and then back on. Could be interference close to the Mac you're trying this on. Could also be a range issue.

Do you have SSID broadcast enabled? What sort of security do you have running?

I'd also create a new network location and try to join the network through that-this will create entirely new entries in the network list (AND the keychain if you're using encryption) that could fix the issue.

If the above don't help, I'd turn OFF AirPort on the iMac, REBOOT the computer, turn its AirPort back on and then try again.

Very good advice.

Surprisingly that does sometimes solve Mac network issues.

Thanks for the response. I gave this a try last night and kept getting the same error.

I do have SSID enabled and the WPA/WPA2 security. I will try the new location and rebooting with airport off.

FYI I have tried setting up networks on an airport extreme, airport express and time capsule all with the same problems.

Thanks for your help.

Try turning off security temporarily. Get that out of the equation.

Do you have MAC address filtering turned on? If so, you have to allow the MAC address of the new machine to connect.

Sorry for dragging this thread back up, but the problem still persists. I believe that MAC filtering is turned off. It is set to whatever the default is. I never mess around with those settings. What exactly does MAC filtering do? I have tried turning off security and that did not help.

Thanks for your help.

I tried creating a new network location and turning airport off, rebooting and turning it back on. It just seems like the "n" portion of the wifi card is not enabled or something.

Thanks,

Did you disable security? That could be a big player.

Yes, I disabled security, restarted the router and rebooted the computer. I am using the dual band time capsule as the wireless router, and with the security on, I can connect to the G network without problem. I have the same security on both the G and N networks, so could it be causing a problem for one and not the other?

Thanks for your help.

If you entered the key incorrectly on the iMac, that would be VERY bad. With WPA and WPA2 it could even not try to connect.

On the Time Capsule, did you just unplug it and then plug it back in, or did you unplug it and leave it for a while? A quick pull/plug will "restart" the device, but not necessarily do everything a several minute downtime power cycle will.
