Wireless DSL Gateway as standalone router?

I currently use an Actiontec Wireless DSL Gateway (GT704), into which DSL is fed through the phone line, with an integrated 4-port router. I'll be dropping the DSL, in favor of cable internet service. The cable modem I'll be using is not wireless-ready, so I'll need a router.

Using the Actiontec as a wireless base station, should I in theory, be able to connect the cable modem via ethernet to one of the four provided ports and then use the wireless capabilities on that unit? How about connecting other devices to the other router ports?

In other words, can such a device work as any other router might?

Thanks.

It should work just fine. You said the cable modem doesn't have any router features so the routing will be handled by your existing router, and I don't see why it wouldn't work just because it was sold as a DSL modem with router.
