Anyone able to set-up free (or very low cost) phone service that is not dependent on having the computer turned on?? (ie NO MagicJack type set-up)

I'm looking for more of a step-by-step guide.
I've been following general links that one for a while, but I keep running into roadblocks. (ie service isn't Mac friendly, etc...)

You can purchase Skype phones that will work just fine without a computer. They can connect to your router or to your wifi.

An iPod Touch with a mic (or iPhone) can also use Skype over wifi.

Look for a SIP provider and a SIP ATA (analog telephone adapter). Then just plug a normal phone into the adapter which connects via ethernet to your router. The Linksys SPA adapters are good.
