Here’s want I want to do. I want to have a network of 15 macs with 100 base T that can share data. I do not want to connect them to the internet

More detail
I want to set up a dedicated computer to be my server in my classroom room and put the OSX server software on it (not sure what the best option is). I have a server set up currently but I do not have the network software so I can only connect a limited number of machines. The network runs out at about 12 machines running at the same time.
Is the software called?- OSX Server? What does it cost?

What new Mac would be best to serve 15-20 computers?

Also can we use Time Capsule for wireless back up on a 100base T network? Or must the whole network be on line?

What is my best backup solution then. Currently its just a second drive and Time Machine on each machine. Any thoughts?

You'll need a 10/100 switch, or ideally, a 10/100/1000 switch. If you have 15 computers, I would recommend a 24 port switch. You never know what other peripherals you might want to add (such as a printer, or more computers.)

The Time Capsule does not need to be online to do backups, it just needs to be on the same network as your computers.

OS X Server software costs $250 for schools. It will run on any Intel Mac.

OS X Server seems like overkill. Can anyone else suggest an alternative?
