Tethering and Airport Express

I just bought an Airport Express to stream music to a set of powered speakers at work. While at work, I use my tethered iPhone for internet access. Unfortunately, when I connect to the network I created with AE, tethering does not work. I have to turn Airport off to use my internet connection. Is there a solution?

What do you mean by "tethered" ?
Connected to the AE WLAN ?
So you want to stream music to the AE< and at the same time, use its WLAN ?

Nope, my iPhone is tethered to my laptop, providing internet access through the 3G network.

I still don't get what you are trying to do.
What are you connecting to the "network [...] created with AE" ? The laptop ? The iPhone ?
Do you want to connect the laptop to the WLAN and the tethered iPhone at the same time ?

What I am trying to do is be connected to the WLAN for Airtunes and the iPhone for internet access at the same time. The iPhone and Network Preferences screen both say that I am still connected to both when I have Airport on and am connected to the WLAN, but apparently the WLAN has precedence for internet connectivity. Is there a way to change that?

Short answer AFAIK: no, nothing you can do.
You can only connect to one network at a time.

Open up System Preferences
Go to Network
Select your Tethered iPhone, then click on the Gear button
Set Device Order...
Make sure your Tethered iPhone is at the top, with your wireless below it.
This will make sure your Tethered iPhone is used as the primary connection for internet settings, but it should also still see devices on the wireless network (I think.)

Yes, it will see them, but I don't think it will be able to send / receive data on both connections simultaneously.
Wouldn't this mean that the laptop had two IP addresses at the same time ?

Two IPs and two distinct MAC addresses. Applications can access each port individually (and send/receive data from each distinct port.) I routinely have both my ethernet and airport connected at work for Remote Desktop. It'll utilize both ports.
iTunes should do the same. For purposes of playing music to the speakers, it'll only use the AirPort. Should, anyway.

how do you know it'll use both simultaneously? I would not trust the audio airport streaming as a real proof. At work over ethernet and airport, you are still probably on the same subnet, and Apple's special setup with iTunes and Airport hardware would account for it using airport to stream audio.

Sorry, I should be a little more clear. Whatever port that has priority will be used for internet traffic. However, devices detected on other ports (i.e. BlueTooth, Firewire, etc.) will still show up. The software will still be able to communicate directly with those devices even if they're on a different network port.
I do not know if this is OS centric or applications specific, you could be correct. It is possible that Apple has written iTunes, ARD, etc. to be smart enough to look for associated devices over other connected interfaces.
Either way he gets what he wants, browsing the internet via his tethered phone wile streaming music over his local wifi.

Yes, thanks! This worked -- but only if I locked the settings. If not locked, the Airport connection would jump to the top of the list when connected. Now I can have my cake (internet) and eat it (listen to music) too!

Very cool, I didn't know that the different devices could be used simultaneously.
