Hi all, I have a ibook 14" G4 with 10.3.9
I have a time wrner cable modem.
When I check network preferences it says I am connected yet when I try safari or firefox it won't connect.
Looking around I found something on in start up items, although it was unchecked-littlesnitch daemon. I deleted it.
I ran YASU which ran cron, repaired permissions, updated prebinding, etc.
Didn't help.
I reset safari. Didn't help.
I left my computer running clam ax/v since it takes so long and now I am at work.
I can't start up from my disk warrior CD because my DVD Rom isn't working.
I tried using network assistant and when I tried to connect automatically it wouldn't allow it.
So that's where I'm at. I know I'm going to have to call Time Warner when i get home and see if they can get me on manually but I don't even know if thats going to work.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be and what I could do?
Thanks

Are you saying that all of a sudden you can't connect (when you could connect before)? Or is this an initial installation?
I am assuming you are connected directly through ethernet to the cable modem. Is that correct? You say Network preferences say you are connected, but are you getting a valid IP address (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x; not 169.x.x.x)?
From terminal, can you ping sites like "ping www.google.com"? Can you ping the IP address of the cable modem (look for the router address in Network preferences)?
Try these things out and report back.

Yes, I was using this computer every day for 3 years, including 2 days ago and suddenly last night it wouldnt connect.
I saw an IP address but didn't note the number, i will check when I get home from work.
I am connected through the cable modem.
I will report back

Time Warner says it is a problem with the modem or connection so they are sending out a tech today. Good thing I didnt rush out and buy a new computer!

I'm back!
Time Warner thought it was the cable running into my apt and since I dont have access to the garage the hole goes through I was going to have to get permission from the owner to drill another hole.
The tech brought a long cable up to the apt and it worked fine. Then I said maybe it was a bad splitter from the cable to the cable modem and TV Box. That was it! He replaced both and Im back in business.
I'm still going to buy a new Mini but I dont have to rush now.
Now, which one to get? Do I need 4Gb RAM? Probably not.

Glad they could get it sorted for you. Get 4GB of RAM, but I would get it from a third party instead of Apple and add it later.

Thanks, it didnt work for very long. Turns out it is the cable coming into my apt that is definitely the problem. While fretting about it I realized that there is also cable coming into my bedroom but I have no TV in there. So, I attached a coupler to another long cable i kept from a previous house and now it works fine! Of course I have a cable now running across my floor but it will do until I get the other cable fixed.
As for the 4Gb, I basically surf the net, download some clips, do a lirrle word, thats about it. Do you think the 4Gb will make a difference?
I know Apple's a rip-off for RAM but if you think 4Gb is necessary I will just buy the $799 Mini. It's also a little faster.
The iMac is a much better deal but I hate the screen.

More RAM always helps. It's relatively inexpensive now, too, so having more is cheap. More RAM is a useful "lubricant" that makes OS X run faster.

Than I will go for it. Too bad they make the Mini such a pain to open up. For me I think it would be better to go for the 799 model ir just get the upgrade from Apple for the 599 model. I don't feel comfortable doing it myself.
Any suggestions on a monitor? I really don't want anything bigger than a 20 inch and wish there were more 17 inchers still around (I have a small work area). I also don't want a shiny gloss frame because I hate glare.
