Don't even bother with VNC and port forwarding, something will always break down when you need it most.

It's all built into OS X for free. Has always worked like a charm for me.

System Preferences > Sharing > Apple Remote Desktop > Access Priveleges > VNC users may control screen with password

Set a password and then use any VNC client of your choice to connect to the Mac.

If your Mac is sitting behind a router and you want to be able to access it from anywhere in the world, make sure to open port 5900 on your router and forward it to port 5900 of the Mac you want to control.
