Hello,

I recently setup a external hard drive that is connected to my Apple router. I configured it to have a password to give it some protection on the network. This is shared between two of my computers in the office.

I have been getting errors when nobody is logged, about time machine not being able to make a backup. My assumptions are that since nobody is logged in, the system is unable to mount the network drive and create the sparse bundle.

Am I correct here?
Is there a solution to get around this?

If no one is logged in, there aren't any changes to back up, so why worry about it?

Because what if they have been logged on for the past hour doing stuff, logged out and Time machine's hourly backups just start and try to make a backup?

As you suspect, OS X doesn't mount drives while logged out AFAIK. This may help (copy-paste into Terminal), but I don't know if it works for network drives:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/autodiskmount AutomountDisksWithoutUserLogin -bool true

I haven't received the error since I posted about it. But I ran the command on one of my machines and will monitor both to see if it is still occurring or not.
