I got airport express and extreme, and the express does seem to help with web surfing in the far living room laptop station. But from the same station, it still seem to lag with my excel files-- saving them, entering info. So does express not help with speed/ ie, via file sharing? only help with web? thanks.

Its probably just Office. Its never really been fast. How much lag are we talking?

It's sometimes is so bad, just clicking on the file is 40 sec beachball. Now does not happen on desktop only the laptop in other room (via file sharing)

Try editing a textfile from the other machine using TextEdit (not Office).

Instead of editing an Excel document across the network, edit a text document across the network (NOT using Office).
Is the delay the same?

*sigh*
Basic troubleshooting: exclude all possible variables.
I asked about the Office version, because Office 2011 is *substantially* faster than 2008 and 2004. So upgrading to 2011 is not an option for accelerating the save.
Next: Is it an Office problem, or something related to the network or one of the machines?
Test: Use something OTHER than Office to save a document on the remote computer, and see if it's about the same.
When, over in your other thread on this exact subject, I suggested saving the file directly on the laptop, rather than via the network, that was intended to check if it might not be network-related at all, but just an Office thing.
Instead, I just got a semi-smart-ass retort about people asking for more details usually not having a clue and being unable to help, anyway, and tests being unnecessary.
WTF?
The fact that you're too dense to see why people, who waste their time trying to help you figure out your problem, are suggesting different approaches, isn't exactly encouraging.

thanks, don't get upset. Clearly it's just happening with Excel over the network. Now I don't know if anything can be done, but it's good to ask.
I don't think I'll get 40 second waits from touching the file if's it's on the hardrive.

You don't think.
If there is no delay on a local copy of the same file, then the issue is narrowed down to either a network issue or an Office + network issue. If the lag is still there when you try to open a large text document without using Office, then its a network issue. See?
If opening Textedit or somthing else is too much effort for you, try Quicklook the same doc over the network. You only need to hit the spacebar then.

Well here is the rub too: it's intermittent. Some days are ok and others this problem emerges.
But I'll run a few test. Just hopeing someone knew about the issue already a bit more.

Jeff,
These are experienced users who are trying to help you. Obviously, they are not running into this issue and are trying to give you suggestions on things you can try to narrow down or fix the problem. There's no way they or anybody could know "about the issue already a bit more" since it seems nobody else is having the same issue.
While their tone could be a bit better, I think you should be able to see that it can be frustrating when they make simple suggestions for things for you to test and you shoot them right down.
This forum is all about sharing information and helping others, and whenever I need help, I follow others' suggestions and report back. I think that's what you need to do here.

thanks Steve, well this is so obvious to me an issue of the network and really that's it. Just wondering if others have some clue.

If you've already made up your mind then why did you post a question?
Its only slow over wifi over at that station, is there anything else different between them? Do you plug the laptop in to power at both stations?

thanks Blaze. Again, if I did and the problem went away, then what? You see I have to have the laptop in the living room accessing the file with wifi, with Office 2011.

Did it? I was thinking the energy saver setting was sleeping the HD more frequently when its not plugged in.
And Office apps are terrible for checking if all the available volumes even one the one it wants there. My boot/user drive is a SSD but office wants the two HDs spun back up and available too.
