I've been reading that private window still does not prevent sites from knowing it's your computer or phone making the search. Is this true? Thanks

Yes. The private window makes it so that your history and cookies are not saved beyond the session, but there are any number of other ways to detect who is making the search, and any cookies saved before you opened that private window can still be read. If you want to hide your Christmas shopping from someone who lives in the same house, it is great. If you want to hide who you are from advertisers, you need heavier artillery.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
