Hey cheers to Apple for making a fast web browser, curses to them that it's brushed metal, has awful buttons, doesn't have tabbed browsing, doesn't have a customizable toolbar, doesn't have a status bar, aren't any favicons in the bookmark bar and generally is pretty darn ugly...

oh well it's a beta and there are some things we can fix ourselves:

Doesn't have a status bar!?

On the menu bar try clicking "view" then check "status bar".

Looks like he didn't fully explore it. It does have a status bar (not to mention the address bar shows the progress ) and the toolbar is customizable. I tried it and it seems to have trouble handling cookies. It's a beginning, but a poor one I think.

Poor beginning? That's just ludicrous. This thing rocks, it's fast has features Chimera doesn't the bloat that IE doesn't and renders pages the way they were meant to be.

I love it and it is the first browser to dethrown IE on my machine.

I agree, I think it is already a solid browser and will get even better. Remember it is only a beta.

Only a beta, and the first I have used to knock off IE - it rocks - can't wait for polished versions....

Removing the metal look was the very first thing I did. Now I'm thinking about a NetPositive (BeOS' native browser) inspired button set.

Stink different.

I'm using the "demetalized" version now, but it does need new buttons.

Brushed:

That looks loads better. I tried altering the .nib in Interface builder, but I couldn't get the 'toolbar' (which it isn't) re-spaced correctly. any chance of posting the mod (icon tif's & altered .nib's If you are worried abut redistributing the entire app)

Update

I've been using and hacking it.... I like it!

Some Safari alterations... I've got an updated, color version!

Basically I just renamed the pressed and um "not-pressed" tif files.

Here's the link to remove the brushed:

Damn, glad the forum is back up.

I do like the brushed look. but white looks nice too. I like the browser but can't help using chimera with the Windows XP look and Max's XP OS theme... ;-)

How the heck can U stop Safari from underlining the links in a page. It stresses me out and I can't use it for that... ;-)

Just resize the buttons and nudge them around in photoshop until it looks right.

I noticed the alignment is all messed up on my first post, this looks better.

and hey this was kinda fun. (props to dazzla)

course I haven't done the other buttons yet.. it's messed up that they didn't use a "real" toolbar. The buttons are an odd size and that's probably why you have to edit 3 states for a complete change...

Edit the html4.css file in the Safari bundle. It's so nice getting rid of those damned dotted lines too.

and renders pages the way they were meant to be.
That's laughable, 13 of my most frequented websites look like absolute trash in Safari. I sent in all 13 as bug reports.

Other than that I'm 100% happy with it as a beta for Apple.

A slightly different form of Safari customization: If anybody would like their new windows to open where the new ones were, rather than offset so that, if you use fullscreen browsing they're actually partially off the screen and every single time you open a window you have to drag it up and arrgh etc...
Then go to http://homepage.mac.com/castiglione/software.html for an APE module that makes turns off window cascading

Cool !! I hope it will also allow you to remove the brushed metal on the fly ( I don't like application enhancers ) and will allow you to make the address bar rounded just like the google serach bar, it looks so ugly now.

I'm the author of ChimerIcon and as you have read here, SafarIcon will be forthcoming. While I can release the application itself in a couple of days, I won't have time to work on icons. So if you guys have icon sets that you would like to see included in the initial release, please email them to me. Please include a name for the theme and the info you would like to see displayed. Check out ChimerIcon to see how this looks.

It would be cool if Max made some BBX Mercury X buttons for it.

BBX Safari!

Well I didn't want to wait for Max or William to make it, so I made my own from the graphics in the theme. It's not done yet but if it's ok with Max/William I'll make it downloadable.

Will all this be possible with Safaricon?

'textured' turned off, icons made bigger & respaced, Omniweb Icons (not for distribution as a safari set). I didn't put the rounded address bar in because it fouls up on square faveicons (like the one on this board).
Has anybody got a 'bug' icon that would match this?

I Haave created a bug doing this. The bookmarks window briefly appears when I first launch the app & genarate a new window. It's also at a different size and position.
Any body got a clue what I have inadvertently done?

Can CyberGreg please crop the length of his image. It realy messes up the formating of this thread & dosent show any additional info.

P.S. this shot also shows up the old widget's bug in the ChosenOS theme. The 'ghost' of the close widget appears behind the others in non-active windows.

Yeah, Im still trying to track this one down. Its crazy, it only happens in Cocoa apps. I haven't looked into it too hard yet but Im aiming for an early tomorrow solution.

Wow those look so cool.

However I'm staying with the default look - I dig brushed metal and aqua combinations

One problem with brushed metal though - sheets look really ugly with brushed metal (stripes don't go).

I don't get this at all. On normal apps the 'sheat' slides out from under the 'title bar', but on a textured app it just slides out from nowhere, with the wrong apparance. Yet another reason why the 'Textured option' neads more work.

Resexcellence now has a Safari Page for customization, and one new navigation button set for download. It would be nice if those with new icon sets would send them to Resexcellence that way we could all check them out without having to search through all the posts.

Personally I don;t understand how everyone can make such a fuss out of the default look of Safari when it look sbetter than every mod in this thread.

The Chimera rip-off's buttons are odd placed and the pinstripes are wrong. Th epinstrpies seem ALOT more pronounced than usual.

The BBX is just ugly, but I never like any theme before Chosen OSX, so you can see why I don't like ANY of the themes in this thread. Even the Chosen OSX doesn't look right without its textured windows theme.

Personally I think only Choesen OSX is an improvement on the looks of Brushed Metal. I must give swz credit for making a gorgeous variant for textured windows. That said, rather than trying to make Safari look like other browsers why not just make a completely new theme for it?

P.S. The XP theme is the ugliest of them all, the colors are much brighter than the actual thing, and its amazing you made XP look worse than usual.

I don't know if it's just because I'm a new mac user (maybe the brushed apps are still new for me) but I love the brushed look and IMHO the default look is the best I have seen compared to the ones on show here. Maybe with the exception of chosen. chosen looks great except for the untextured window as K++ pointed out.

But I must say....great customization skills shown by everyone here!!! =]

Yea, I like Safari's default button icons the best too. As for brushed metal, the thing I don't care for is the center highlight. If it was flat, like Max's Brushed theme, I wouldn't mind it.

thanks man you make it all worthwhile.

seriously though I find Safari's default buttons big and ugly. I also don't like the blue highlights in the url status bar and the default fav icon. And the brushed appearance seems off for a web browser since it isn't trying to mimic a real world device like itunes, quicktime player, imovie, etc.. plus with the aqua scrolls, popups, buttons, menubar, et al, it seems a little mishmassed. anyway to each their own. I've been using my grey buttons for awhile and I like them. If you want to check them out they even work with brushed turned on.

appreciate your interest be it positive or not.
