Is anyone else having this same problem? All I get is a bunch of text gobbledy-gook that shows up in the browser. Nothing downloads at all. I've tried using IE and Safari, both with similar results.
Is there some trick that I'm missing?
Thanks,
Jason

Control-click on the download link and in the contextual menu, choose Download Link To Disk.

I tried that already - same result.
I think the problem is that the download link ends in ".sitx" instead of ".sit." I changed the URL to ".sit" and it said the homepage member's site couldn't be found.

I was going to try that next, but since i'm having the same problem with IE I was skeptical that another browser would fix it.
I mean, shouldn't these pages be optimized for IE? (I can understand if Safari has a problem)

Um, Max, if you are reading this, what is the deal with sitx? Why would you use that format? IMHO, it is just another [reprehensible, but understandable] attempt to get everyone to upgrade to the newest version of StuffIt Expander. I'm an early adopter, love trying new stuff, and I didn't have any problem download SS2.7, but I say if a compression format causes *anyone* *any* problem, I say screw that, go with something that everyone knows how to deal with, especially since sitx offers nothing new.
BTW, that was meant as a semi-flame towards Aladdin, not you, Max. You know I love you!
If you really want to use the "best" compression format, do a .dmg.bz2. Any version of StuffIt Expander that came with OS X can decompress those fine, they compress down at least as much as sitx, and I think you can even make them with DropStuff. Err, I just checked that, and you can't. If you would really like a nice "DropDmgBz2", post back here and I'll make you one. No charge.
Yes, it annoys me that much.

I wanted to test sitx, and apparently it does not work well. The reason for testing it was that I wanted to compress the theme as much as possible. Dmgs don't compress files very well, but I have to use them because I want to package the theme nicely. If you would make me a "DropDmgBz2", I could try it.

Max,
I think it would be highly apreciated if you did not use *.sitx. I downloaded SmoothStripes 2.7 yesterday, but after several failed attempts to extract the files - I just said $%&% it! I am really disliking Alladin right now.
Thanks.

Yeah, ok I wont. I will see if I can upload a .sit version sometime (I'm only on a modem ).

it's just the file extension that's the problem, just change it to .sit and the link and it will work just fine.

b00zo: try rar compression: http://rarlabs.com/rar/rarosx-3.2.b2.tar.gz
so far the only osx rar encoder is cli only but it's fairly easy to use.
./rar a -m3 sometheme.rar sometheme
where sometheme.rar is destination rar file and sometheme is the source directory.

I thought compressed .dmg files compressed pretty well. Apple doesn't recommend compressing them anymore than they already are.
You found this to not be the case, Max?

Well, they compress ok. But compared to .sitx or even .sit they are pretty large. I don't have any exact numbers, but that's how I remember it from testing it a while ago.
Isn't it so that a plain .dmg file can get corrupted when you download it? That's why I .sit them.

Given the way that TCP/IP works, nothing should get corrupted during download. But if something does, .dmg and .sit have the same probability of being corrupted. Corrupted is corrupted.
Some test results using ThemePark 1.0b9 - .dmg - 484,738 bytes
- .sit - 481,286 bytes
- .sitx - 478,096 bytes
So, stuffing saves 0.71%, and using .sitx saves 1.4%. Leading me to believe that using compressed .dmg's is the way to go.
Just to check a slightly larger file, here are the results for Mighty Mouse 1.1: - .dmg - 2,096,673 bytes
- .sit - 2,088,599 bytes
- .sitx - 2,080,851 bytes
Percentage savings are 0.39% for .sit and 0.75% for .sitx. Yup, screw Stuffit.
P.S. All tests were done using Maximum Compression in Stuffit.

Ok, thanks smeger for clearing that up. I guess it'll start uploading plain dmg files from now on.
