hey everyone,

how would you make an alias without having the little arrow on it? could you replace the arrow graphic with a transparent pic? if so, where is this located?

thanks,
chris early

i did a search of these forums for this same question recently, it has been asked a few times, and it does not seem like there is anything that can be done about them. iirc none of the posts ever gave a way to get rid of the arrows.

Well, up through 10.1 the alias arrow was held in a file with the rest of the System icons. But in 10.2 they changed the entire layout and now icons are kept all over the place. Some are in the Dock, some in the Finder, others all over the place.

Surprisingly enough, CandyBar hasn't developed a way to change it so I assume it's juist not possible in Jaguar or they just haven't found it yet.

As I recall, at one point we thought the cursor was hard coded. Then they went and found the file it's kept in, so it's probably possible.. as soon as someone finds it.

I, myself don't use Aliases as much. Only in the Root of my HD where I keep a shortcut to my Home folder and Desktop for use in Open/Save dialogs. It's just easier to navigate to a folder when it's at the root. Makes ir much faster to get where I want to go.

It's certainly possible:

That's just an quick example I did.
You can change it to whatever you want.

Use Iconographer X 2.4 to open /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemIcons.bundle/Contents/Resources/SystemIcons.rsrc, and edit Resource ID -20789.

Cool, so it does exist. Strangely, CandyBar doesn't edit it.. That's an odd oversight. I would think they'd jump at the chance.
