Is there anyway to change a desktop picture from say 1600x1200 or 1600x1024 to 1440x900? I have a new iMac and want to switch some of my desktop pictures but when I do using Photoshop, the two size areas are linked together and when I change one I change the other.
Any help is appreciated!!

Two ways to do what you want:

1 - In Photoshop, uncheck the Constrain Proportions option that is the second up from the bottom on the Image Size window. This will let you enter whatever values you want as Width and Height and they won't interfere with each other. Which will, of course, result in squished images...

2 - In the Desktop pane in System Preferences, so long as the image you want to use is not in /Library/Desktop Pictures/ or ~/Library/Desktop Pictures/, there is a pulldown menu with options on how to treat the desktop. Stretch to fill screen would also do what you want, without having to do anything to the images themselves.

And what I would do:

In Photoshop, resize the image to the greatest dimension (width or height). Say you want to change 1600x1200 to 1440x900. Change width to 1440 and height will automatically change to 1080 (this is with Constrain Proportions checked on). Now trim 180 pixels from the image's height, either by using the Canvas Size tool, or using the Rectangular Marquee Tool with a Fixed Size of 1440x900.

Or just use the Fill Screen option in System Preferences...
