It's 0635 in the desert and I just finished a 9 hour download of the 10.2.5 combined updater. (Dial-up connecting at 28.8... Kill me!)

Why? Because I somehow screwed up my system messing around with themes. It's not the themers' fault, so don't get up in my mud about that. I'm not blaming anyone. I just want to know what's going on. Max & Swiz will find no bigger fans than me!

I was using the latest version of Theme Changer and Max's "SmoothStripes Glossy" theme... The one just before 2.8, which he updated just the other day.

After switching to the theme, my Menu Bar Clock and Internet Connect (Modem) Status were gone and I couldn't get them back. I tried deleting preferences, resetting them in the appropriate Preferences panel. Everything.

This happened before under 10.2.4, while using a theme or Transparent Dock. To fix it, I'd just rerun the 10.2.4 standalone updater and 10 minutes later, all was well. Not elegant, but it worked. Under 10.2.5, that doesn't work anymore. I had to archive and install Jaguar again, then run the combined updater.

What in the world is causing this? I was told the theme was overrwriting the SystemUIServer, but if I'm running a current theme, wouldn't others run into this? Is it a problem with Theme Changer itself? What gives?

In the meantime, it's old-school Aqua for me. No hacks. No BS.

(Sorry to be so long-winded).

Coulda just downloaded Aqua fix and then install it and then restart. i find it silly that people have to think they have to reinstall an entire system over again just because something isnt working. i got my menu items back i had the same problem you did because i was using my theme Safety First when installing 10.2.5 but then used aqua fix and then themechanger again to reinstall the theme and everything is peachy.

Thanks for the condescending response, but I did use Aqua Fix in attempts to fix this under 10.2.4 and it didn't work.

Actually, Aqua Fix was a first thought this time, too, but a box popped up telling me it wasn't made for 10.2.5 (since that had just come out). I chose to reinstall.

Didn't mean to offend you. What is this, the Lounge?

This sounds really strange. Ive never had ThemeChanger do anything ill to my system and Im positive that none of Max's SmoothStripes themes ever replaced the SystemUIServer anyhow. Really quite odd. I would just chock it up to a single bad experience. I wouldnt expect that this would happen again but who knows.

aqua fix works with 10.2.5, it said the same thing to me. i used it, i restarted. everything was fine. themechanger and other programs will not mess up your computer. if you know nothing about your computer, i guess it is nice to blame it on something. things can always be fixed(without resinstalling your system over and over and over). how long have you had a mac? 3 years or less? sometimes it really helps to read forums and keep an update on anything and everything. it has helped me out a lot and i have learnt a lot of things i would not have known before by just reading a few of the posts posted. you can't just expect everything to work all the time.

I know everything about my computer and I've been using a Mac for more than 10 years now (I started with playing on a SE/30 with System 7). And it WAS ThemeChanger that ****ed my system. I was able to fix it but it was something ThemeChanger did to my system. I'm not pissed on ThemeChanger nor it's programmers (but I won't try it until the next version). There was nothing else that could have ****ed my system, 100% sure. Oh and AquaFix wouldn't work, I fixed it in single user mode with tcfix (don't recal the exact name of the thing).

it's the user, not the program. most likely you installed the bootx along with the theme which has been said over and over that you should not do this with the current OS's. I am sure that you will know in the future not to do this.
