I've recently switched back to a mac after being a linux/pc user for several years

I don't know if this is the correct forum to ask this question in, but you guys have a good eye for GUI stuff that most people don't. I have a 17" powerbook, and was playing with the antialiasing options in the general control panel. The "Standard" option is normal antialiasing, and it looks like the other 3 options are all different levels of subpixel antialiasing. My question is, do any of you actually LIKE them? I can see halos of color around black antialiased text. It's not cool. Does it just take some getting used to and then I'll think it's okay? I don't like anything but the standard option, and i'm using an LCD!!

thanks,
Adam

I'm on a CRT, but I definitely prefer standard anti-aliasing to the subpixel rendering... so no, it's not just you. Some people apparently find the standard antialiasing too blurry, but I for one think it looks just fine... matter of taste, I guess.

It makes sense for you to feel that way on a CRT, subpixel rendering is meant for LCDs

I think the other options are actually *more* blurry than the standard option.

I'm on an Apple Studio 17" LCD display and I prefer the "Standard - best for CRT" setting. I like crisp text, not the blurrier, softer antialiasing settings.

I have the new TiBook, and I only like the 'Light' setting. I guess it's beween CRT and LCD or something. I think it's subpixel smoothing but to such a little degree that I don't see the colored rainbow halo around the letters. All the other settings look blurrier to me.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

(They should start paying money for this )

Try creating a decent ColorSync profile with SuperCal. The Apple-supplied profiles don't exactly bring out the best in their LCDs.

As an example, try this profile I created for my G3 PowerBook. The anti-aliased text looks a while lot better with this.
