A quick update to my edit of the Iridium QuickSilver theme.. It's got a proper Brushed Metal look now, and I added the x-+ widgets from Max's SS Sunken theme (big thanks to you Max for letting me use your stuff).
Download (GZipped Disk Image, 923 kb) (Down until further notice!)

This looks alot better with the SmoothStripes X-+ widgets. It would be even nicer if it also had the SmoothStripes scrolls.

Excellent! Previously, the only thing holding me back from using Quicksilver was the 10.1 buttons (I'm picky ), but this is nice indeed!

Wha?
This is a pretty good theme, you shoudn't be rude about someone elses work, unless that is you have some great unreleased work that puts it to shame.

"Remix" It isn't his work persay, "lets rip this part from here, rip that from there" etc. etc. Originality is what counts.
But I am sorry that I can not state my own opinion on the matter without someone whining. :-\

When you don't have all the info, and force your opinion upon people...well you look pretty bad.
No one knows who made the original Quicksilver theme. Different people have continued updating it since it came out, but no one seems to know who made the first.
He also sought permission from every themer that he used graphics from, and has given them proper credit. No where did he claim this was his original work at all. He is merely doing the leg work that the rest of us are too lazy (or we just don't know how) to do. But he's also done an excellent job of updating this theme.
So if you can't contribute to the thread, or stay on topic, don't post.

Look, I've never said it's my original creation. Read the ReadMe..
The reason this was released at all is because (in another, old, thread), I asked how hard it would be to add Aqua elements from 10.2 to the Iridium QuickSilver theme. Obviously it wasn't that hard, and people really liked the result and urged me to release it.
I don't feel great releasing something that isn't all mine, I can tell you that, but people wanted the theme, and Max gave his permission. Tell me why I shouldn't have released it?

Nice looking theme. And if you got permission to do what you did, then there should be no one complaining.
Even if it is someone else's work, It DOES take a crapload of time to edit those themes.

I'm not gonna keep flaming, even though I'm really not the one that is doing it. I know who started the original, I never said he didn't claim anything becaue I already know all the facts, and I have been staying on topic, not everyone has to play the kiss ass role..

Who made the original then? It would be great if you told us so that I could get a proper permission you know.. Since noone else knows, and you are god...
Seriously, if you don't like the theme, just don't use it.. I couldn't care less. But as I said, if you do know who made the original, tell us instead of being an ass about it.

sure seems to me like you could care less. seems to me people sure do get defensive.
the person who made it posts on these forums, they will say if they want to. I am not in charge of saying who.

it’s so easy: if you are not in charge of saying something, just shut up.
cerbero asked about the original creator before he modified the theme, neither the creator himself responded nor andybody could tell about the creator. he called the theme a remix, that’s fine, max gave him permission for using his widgets, so what’s the problem?
if you can’t remember, mike, read the thread again:

Mike: I'm not defending anything. I'm just really tired of you.. It seems to me that whenever you make a post on these forums it's either to disagree or to make an ass out of yourself (or a combination of the two). If you can't post something even remotely helpful, why did you reply in this thread at all?
Can we just leave this now, please? As you said yourself, if the author frequents these forums, he would protest if he had a problem, so I don't see why you should do that for him. Thanks.
Thanks p.h..i...l.... for explaining the situation

one question though. Did you change anything outside of the widgets? Not a big fan of the sunken widgets, so i was wondering if everything else was identical.
Maybe you could make sunken and floating versions?

Thanks for remixing and releasing this theme! It looks fantastic!
And, Mike, stop being such a theme snob. Yes there is a value in completely original themes such as yours, but there is also value in tweaking stuff that's messed up to look perfect. And also, didn't your mama ever tell you if you don't have anything nice to say you should put a sock in it?

Cerbero, very nice remix man... I dig this rendition more than the custom one I did ontop of ChosenOS. I also wasn't using the old QS theme due to the nasty looking pre-10.2 Aqua elements but you did this theme correctly and added in Max's wicked cool embedded widgets... that's all this theme really needed
Thanks man

I'm working on a new theme right now that is 100% my own (*looks in Mike's direction* ), but I might release a new version of this one in the future, and if I do I will take all your opinions here in account (e.g. rounded corners and so on).
Superfula: The x-+ widgets are the only Aqua items that aren't recolored ones from the default 10.2 Aqua, if that's what you mean.
CarbonG4: Yeah, your shot was what got me to try out the sunken widgets.. Thanks for the inspiration

Oh
Yeah, it's in the initial post.. I added the Brushed Metal look. Before it just used the default Aqua one, which wasn't very pretty.

The Finder icon is in the SNOW.E 2 set ( www.rad-e8.com), and the X11 Icon is the white Finder icon from that set, but edited.

And I think it's just hilarious that people redistribute my work without even mentioning my name. I'm sure Max or the others wouldn't stand for it.

I'm going to assume you are kidding. Especially since cerbero made a thread asking if anyone here made Quicksilver, or if anyone knew who made it. No one knew.
Cerbero: Thanks for the info. But I'm still hoping for a floating widgets version along with the sunken widgets

Seriously? Did you make it?
I started a thread some time ago asking if anyone knew who had made the theme originally, and noone knew about it, and noone claiming to be the author replied in the thread. So people thought I should go ahead and release it.
Had I known who the author was I would have asked for permission and everything of course. I have much respect for anyone who creates anything kickass, and I would never have released it if it weren't for the requests to do so and the aforementioned fact that noone actually knew who had originally created the theme.
I'm taking it down now (temporarily?). I'll also ask everyone else who's already downloaded it please not to spread it further, thanks.
If you're okay with me distributing the Remix (or not, naturally I would respect that), please reply here again.
BTW, I'm doing this solely based on your post count, had someone with say, 100 posts claimed to be the author, I would probably not have believed it

Well actually with a little digging you can find out who the original authors are. There is another version of this theme for OS X called QuicksilverR1.3 by Lars at lostboi.com (which you can also download from Resexcellence). This is the one I've used because of his non-metal version.
His ReadMe states:
Credit goes to the owners starfleetx and v0id7.

Ok, thanks for clearing things up.
What's the credit for v0id7 for BTW? As in, which parts of the theme are his?
I'll just keep the theme off-line until things get cleared up further. I don't mind, since I can still use it myself.
If starfleetX (and v0id7 ??) are okay with it though, I'll throw in a new ReadMe and put it up for download again.

ok here goes...
many moons ago when quicksilver was put out to the masses on a now defunct xthemation site another version of it came out soon after called Quicksilver(rev.1) with very colorful and i believe the first original window widgets released by anyone...i remember being floored at the time cuz all the others were versions of the gummie bear aqua jobbies...anyone else remember this?...it may not have been seen by many cuz the site went down and with it quicksilver died...i think i read somewhere that the arteest was fully embedded in schoolwork and wouldn't be able to continue to update it...
anyways i have this theme tucked away in the corner of my closet...

Dude, he asked weeks ago and you didn't say anything. He never claimed it was his and you haven't updated it in years. And it's not really much of a theme you can claim anyway is it? It's just grey unlined Aqua, which isn't even your original idea. It looks great, but you abandoned it a long time ago and didn't stand up when he was asking for permission. It's like if Max didn't update Brushed to work with 2 revisions of OSX and someone else came along and updated and remixed half the pxms and released. Brushed metal wasn't Max's idea, and making a brushed theme isn't either. Maybe you were joking and I am just taking you too seriously.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Resorting to name-calling are we now? Well, at least get your sources straightned out, Mr. Big Shot-- the name Iridium was suggested to me by rtamesis and Primus.

It is entirely possible that starfleetx didn't see the older thread. Not everyone here visits on a daily (or weekly for that matter) basis. It's a nice theme design (not merely a grey unlined Aqua), hence the update by Lars, the remix by Cerbero and the subsequent requests.
Perhaps starfleetx could work with Lars and Cerbero and release a joint-effort, definitive version of Iridium.

Doesn't seem like a dispute over theme design, rather a dispute over ownership of the name "Iridium." It's hilarious how you could mistake the two.

Actually, I think it's hilarious that you actually dug that up. FYI, I'mDaMac is also correct in that Synotic's theme *looked* a lot like my own. The problem wasn't just the name.
Carry on, folks. If I consider releasing a theme of "my own" in the future that "borrows" from some of your own other works without trying to contact any of you directly, I won't hesitate.
No sweat off my brow.

The really hilarious thing is how you still have the same childish tone you did two years ago! Theoretically you could still be under 15, but probably not. It's like you either don't know or don't believe that he wrote here a few weeks ago and said he was bringing 'your' theme up to the 21st century and asked if anyone knew who the author was and no one spoke up. Everyone acted like it was a big mystery and the great themer who did the mysterious irridium theme had ascended to heaven or something so he released it. It's not like he's making any money on your titlebar and it looks like he did a lot more work on it than you ever did. Copywrite law??? Pssshhhhhhhhhh..... I think you should THANK him for breathing a little life back into your long forgotten, long dead grey unlined Aqua mod. that looked nearly identical to a lot of themes going around back in the early days. I does look nice, but not nice enough for you to turn into another dramatic themer crying about how someone stole your menubar gradient. He's never even said the theme was "his own" (quotes yours} he always said it was yours... he just didn't know your name and didn't search hard enought for it since he was told that the true author of that theme was unknowable. I'll look for that thread too if you keep up your accusing and complaining!!! What a baby!

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Damn the copyright laws to hell!
copyright laws do not cover copyright infringements which all mods to the aqua interface are...themes are not copyrightable...
you can release all the mods to mods that you want to because once on the web these no longer belong to the owner...believe it!
it's only out of dearness of our hearts...
and to keep this thead on track...i dislike the sunken window widgets on this one...they suit some themes but not YOUR theme variation Cerbero...

Carry on, folks. If I consider releasing a theme of "my own" in the future that "borrows" from some of your own other works without trying to contact any of you directly, I won't hesitate.
No sweat off my brow.

I agree, your name should be mentioned. Also I find it funny, that the ones that are complaining about you getting upset, have never made themes.
I can understand starfleet's rant.
If you take someone's idea, or work and "make it your own" you should at least give credit where credit is do. I see a lot of this going on in the GUI world.
There should be no reason starfleet shouldn't be credited.

I've been following this thread now with some perverse amusement. it seems to me that Cerbero did not intentionally exclude any authors of the theme. Infact he requested from this board if anybody knew who the authors were so he could get permission.
I don't know copyright law but what Atomic Rooster seems to make sense but Cerbero with deference to the authors pulled the theme.
I don't know why the author startfleet x is whining, since it seems that Cerbero did his due dilegance to find you, and he pulled the theme from public consumption when he didn't have to.
BTW I never created a theme and I'm not saying starfleet shouldn't get recogniztion or give his permission to use the theme. Tecnically it may not be against copyright law but its still nice to ask (and accept the answer even if its no)
Regards
Mike
